NEW DELHI, Aug.1 (Reuters) – Ten people died on Saturday when a crane collapsed, trapping them underneath, at a state-run shipyard in the southern Indian town of Visakhapatnam , said a senior police official.
The incident at the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd site occurred when a new crane collapsed during a load test, Suresh Babu, a deputy police commissioner, told Reuters.
Rescuers were trying to cut the crane and remove the pieces from it, Babu said. He added that if anyone was stuck alive under the crane, it would not be found until it was lifted.
There was no immediate comment from the Hindustan Shipyard. A company official said senior executives were in a meeting about the crash.
