Joe Root hit 77 and Tom Curran put in a good all-round performance as the England touring company warmed up for its white-ball games against South Africa with a roster game at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. Root was the top scorer with 77 when Team Buttler beat Team Morgan by 50 runs in a 40-overs-a-side match. Curran took four for 25 for the squad of England captain Eoin Morgan before making the second-highest score of 31 for the losers. The game was a warm-up for three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals against South Africa, starting with a T20 international at Newlands on Friday.
England will play two T20 matches within the selection in Paarl on Monday. Four of the six tour matches are in Newlands and two in Paarl.
South Africa canceled a scheduled warm-up game on Saturday after a second team member tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.
Root made his 77 from 77 balls and shared a 103 fourth wicket partnership with Sam Billings (52).
Team Buttler was eliminated for 255 in 39.1 overs, losing their last five wickets for 28 runs, three of which fell to medium-paced Curran.
Each of Team Morgan’s specialist hitters reached double digits, but none scored more than the captain’s 20. His side slipped to 102 for six before Chris Woakes (55) and Curran placed 79 for the seventh wicket.
Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory took three for 18 for the winning team.
