US Democrats, who seek gains in state governments, are instead losing ground

Democrats voted in the 2020 U.S. election to drive back much of the Republican presence in state governments, but lost ground when the votes were counted on Wednesday.

The Republicans won majorities in both houses of the New Hampshire State House and took back the governor’s mansion of Montana, which had been held by a retired Democrat.

Greg Gianforte’s win in Montana against Democrat Mike Cooney gave Republicans 27 of the country’s 50 governorates.

Republicans will have at least the 59 state legislatures they held on election day, but the final balance will depend on Arizona, where the results are still incomplete, said the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

Democrats, who started with just 39 chambers, increased their spending that year on campaigns in eight states, including Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

In 35 states, the price of scrutiny of legislation is the ability to build congressional districts for the partisans’ benefit, as Republicans did before 2012 when they increased their majority in the US House of Representatives. Here are this year’s results for states whose lawmakers draw congressional lines, as well as the results of this year’s 11 gubernatorial competitions, based on data from the NCSL:
