White House adviser Jared Kushner, who boarded the first commercial flight between Israel and the United Arab Emirates following a US-brokered agreement to normalize relations, said on Monday that there would be hope for a more peaceful era in the region.
Flight 971 of the Israeli national airline El Al then took off from Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv for Abu Dhabi.
A joint US-Israeli delegation was on the historic flight, led on the American side by Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump.
“Although this is a historic flight, we hope it will begin an even more historic journey to the Middle East and beyond,” said Kushner shortly before boarding.
“The future doesn’t have to be dictated by the past. This is a very hopeful time and I believe there is so much peace and prosperity possible in this region and around the world.”
The agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates to normalize relations was announced by Trump on August 13. This makes the United Arab Emirates the first Gulf country, after Egypt and Jordan, and only the third Arab nation to develop relations with Israel.
The word “peace” was painted on the cockpit of the aircraft in Arabic, English and Hebrew.
